What To Wear To Your Engagement

Let’s talk color palette…

Neutrals, muted colors, & subtle earth tones are your best friend for photos.

Some favorite flattering colors include earth tones and neutrals.Example colors like ivory (instead of pure white), beige, tan, mustard, rust, navy, forest green are all flattering for portraits and always age well. Jean or leather jackets pair well with most outfits and can add a whole other look throughout your session.

Wear What Makes You Feel Your Best

Dressing in what makes you feel your best could mean choosing an outfit you already feel great in and may already wear often. Sometimes we think we need a new outfit/dress/etc for a photoshoot, but the truth is, you may already be confident in something you LOVE and wear often! If you see that one outfit hanging up you know you look fantastic in, you may just want to stick with it! Keep this in mind :)

And of course, if you're feeling unsure about an outfit/the color palette/etc, feel free to send me pictures before your session for my feedback. I’m here to help!

Aim for:

– Comfortable shoes to walk in! Trail locations generally require some hiking!
– Bring a neutral jacket or coat that you love with your outfit for variety in your photos [corduroy, leather, etc]
– Eat and hydrate before your shoot! There is generally some walking/hiking involved to get to some of these stunning locations.
– Ironing out wrinkles the day or morning of your shoot
– Keep a lint roller in the car for freshening up before your shoot
– Bring a water bottle, backpack or large bag for a change of clothes, accessories, and/or a blanket for sitting down shots.

What to Avoid:
– Hair ties on the wrist
– Apple watches, keys/wallet in your pocket
– Primary , bright , or saturated colors
– Busy patterns
– Clashing styles of clothing [your outfit is dressed up and partner’s more casual]
Style both casual or both dressed up

Avoid saturated, primary colors.

Vibrant and saturated primary colors tend to take over and can be distracting to the eye. For example: Stray away from bright royal blues, bright green, canary yellow, fire-engine red, purple, and bright pink can steal the show and distract in the photos. Busy patterns can distract in a photo as well, so it’s a good idea to choose something that doesn’t have busy patterns or logos.

Pairing Outfits with 3+ People

If you are pairing an outfit with another person’s outfit, try to stray away from matching your colors to a T. Choose colors which complement one another. You can pair the outfits side by side next to each other, or dress up and check them out at the same time together to get a good feel of how they mesh together.

A helpful search on Pinterest is ‘earth tone color palettes’ - there’s a lot of visual color stories to view here. For shoes, keep in mind if we are walking outdoors for your session, heels are going to be difficult to walk around in. I recommend choosing a comfortable option.

Again, what you wear is your personality, so you should choose what you feel best in and more importantly, the most comfortable in. I love when people wear clothing they would normally wear day to day.

Hopefully this is a good starting point for you!

If you need anything, or a second opinion, please reach out! Send me photos of your outfit idea!

Don't forget your furry best friend! Use a black or leather leash to avoid distractions in photos. Give your dog plenty of exercise before the session and bring their favorite treats or squeaky toy!
